  9. The fifth general purpose computer (GPC) contains the backup flight system (BFS). This is a piece of computer software that will take control of the Orbiter if something happens to the other four computers. The BFS was written by a different team of software programmers than those who wrote the software for the PASS computers. This is to make sure that any errors that may have been written in the primary software will not be repeated in the backup system.
